PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

PNG is a raster graphic format that is used to view and compress images. It was developed in 1995 as an alternative to GIF, which was licensed commercially. In 1996, with the release of version 1.0, it was recommended by W3C, as a full network format. Despite its slow development, PNG is currently supported by all browsers and is the favorite graphic format of many developers.

The PNG format supports color depths up to 48 bits and uses lossless compression. Perhaps his main feature is transparency. Pictures in png format are convenient to overlay on other images, because they do not have a background. This can be useful when creating illustrations, designing a website, creating photographs, etc. The only drawback of PNG was the inability to save several images in one file, which does not allow the use of this technology to create animated pictures.

Most programs allow you to open such files; they also run in any browsers. The default photo viewer on Windows is often used to open PNG files. You can edit PNG files in almost any graphic editor - from simple Microsoft Paint to Adobe Photoshop and GIMP.

JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

JPG is the most popular format for storing raster images on modern computers and the Internet. Photos and images that need to be sent by e-mail or posted on the Internet should be compressed in order to reduce their download time. JPG files are widely used because their compression algorithm significantly reduces the size of the file, making it ideal for sharing, storage and display on websites.

The JPG algorithm is optimally suited for compressing photographs and paintings that contain realistic scenes with low color contrast. Since they are bitmap images, not vectors, the .jpeg and .jpg file formats are best used for digital photography. In smartphones, digital cameras and camcorders, images are stored in this format, this is due to the minimum filling of the memory and the quality of the output.

Typically, jpg is an ordinary picture that opens with a simple tool from Windows or using programs. In most cases, JPEG images are displayed correctly in any JPG because it allows you to get an acceptable picture quality with a small file size due to the use of a compression algorithm.

Converting PNG to JPG

PNG and JPG are both image formats. In this case, why do you need to convert PNG to JPG. There can be many reasons. Depending on the application, both PNG and JPG have advantages and disadvantages. For one element of the website, jpg is preferable, while for the other it is more reasonable to use png. Look at the list of main differences and decide which format is more suitable for your purposes.

PNG Advantages

  • The ability to compress a file with little or no loss at all. The picture retains its original quality regardless of the compression intensity
  • The ability to save an object as much as you like during work, and then modify it again. Original quality does not change
  • The color range of the format is wider than that of GIF. PNG-8 works with 256 colors, PNG-24 works with 16.7 million colors
  • Support alpha channel. This feature allows you to seamlessly combine the image with the background due to reduced transparency. The transparency levels in terms of quantity correspond to the available colors and can vary from extreme contrast to complete dissolution
  • Ability to create and combine layers
  • Availability of inclusion of metadata in the material (if necessary, preservation of copyright information)

PNG Disadvantages

  • Lack of animation mode
  • Difficulties working with full-color image types
  • The inability to save several pictures in one file at once (attempts to add this function to the format were made, but have not yet received widespread recognition)
  • There is no way to store multiple images in one file

JPG Advantages

  • Quality and file size depend on the degree of compression
  • Minimum file size
  • At a low level of compression, image quality does not suffer
  • Easy to open in every browser
  • Editable in all well-known graphic programs
  • Low computational complexity

JPG Disadvantages

  • With a sufficient level of compression, it can "fall apart" into blocks of pixels
  • Each new manipulation reduces image quality
  • Doesn't support transparency
